#08 · LAUNDRY RENOVATIONS

Laundry renovations, worked out like a kitchen.

A laundry is a small room that takes a lot of water, weight and daily use. Cabinetry, bench space, storage, tiling and finishes follow the same preparation logic as a kitchen renovation. Ivan Bodnar looks at the condition first, explains the practical options and prepares a written quotation after assessment.

THE LAUNDRY SCHEDULE

Five items, each checked before anything is priced.

Every laundry is different, so each item is a condition to check and a practical option. It is not a fixed package. What can be reused depends on what the on-site assessment finds.

CABINETRY L-01

WHAT GETS LOOKED AT
Swollen panels near the tub or machine, loose hinges, doors that no longer close.

PRACTICAL OPTIONS
Keep sound carcasses and fit new doors, or replace the run if the inspection calls for it.

BENCH SPACE L-02

WHAT GETS LOOKED AT
Room to fold, clearance over the machines, water damage along edges and joins.

PRACTICAL OPTIONS
Extend or replace the benchtop over front-loading machines where the space allows.

STORAGE L-03

WHAT GETS LOOKED AT
Clutter on the floor, unused wall height, and whether taps and valves can still be reached.

PRACTICAL OPTIONS
Overhead cupboards, a tall cabinet or shelving, with service access kept clear.

TILING L-04

WHAT GETS LOOKED AT
Cracked or hollow-sounding tiles, failed grout, and moisture behind the splashback or around the floor waste.

PRACTICAL OPTIONS
Retile the splashback or floor once the substrate has been checked. See Tiling & Kitchen Splashbacks.

FINISHES & SERVICES L-05

WHAT GETS LOOKED AT
Damaged plaster, worn paint, and where the taps, drainage and power points sit.

PRACTICAL OPTIONS
Plaster repairs and painting. Any plumbing or electrical change is carried out by appropriately authorised specialists.

Check underneath first. Then choose the finish.

Laundries take more water than most rooms, so the kitchen rule applies here even more. If new finishes go on before anyone checks moisture, substrate suitability, service access and underlying damage, the result can be avoidable rework. That might be tiles lifting off a soft wall, or a new benchtop sitting on a swollen carcass.

During the free on-site assessment, Ivan looks at these conditions before suggesting suitable materials. An inspection cannot reveal every concealed issue, though, and scope, permits and licensed trade requirements vary from project to project. Uneven floors and wall repairs are covered on the Flooring and Plasterboard Installation & Plastering pages.

Planning the kitchen as well?

Laundry work often comes up alongside a kitchen renovation in Brighton, and both rooms can be looked at in the same visit. Tell Ivan what isn’t working in your laundry and he’ll talk through what’s practical. Wet-area work further through the house is covered on Bathroom Renovations.
